Why you should consider academic coaching during your time in uni.

Written by Infinite

You got your offer letter from the dream uni that you’ve applied for. You get butterflies in your stomach as this is your first time going to study at a university. You think it will all work out as long as you turn up to all your classes and do all the required work.

But you start to realise that going to lectures and tutorials alone are not enough to pass, let alone do well.

Some students might think, why do I need to do well? I can get a passing grade and still graduate. Technically speaking, this is partially correct. However, having a bare pass on your transcript can shut off future opportunities for any advanced degrees you might need for job promotions and self-enrichment.

Why is it so hard?

And this is why you should aim higher and do well in your first year of uni at least – with appropriate help.

The problem is: where does one start? How do you write that bloody sociology essay and score at least an A for it? How do you avoid losing points by actually answering what the assignment is asking you for? Without all the answers to them, it is quite difficult to do well.

Then comes the problem: who is going to help me to improve my grades?

Uni often offers quite a wide range of support services. Don’t get me wrong; they are fantastic to a certain extent. The only problem is that these support services are generally designed to be one-size-fits-all to suit as many undergraduates as they can in a limited capacity. If the assistance that you require deviates from the standard services, you might be out of luck.

If that is the case, how does a personalised academic coaching program help me achieve what I need?

Everyone has different learning habits. Attending university sometimes also means adopting an entirely new set of practices that you might not have been previously made aware of. This is because tertiary learning is very different than other forms of learning that you are used to. It requires a lot of self-motivation and discipline, which we understand is not everyone’s cup of tea. This is when academic coaching becomes quite handy. You will have a personal motivator that reminds you of your tasks, as well as helping you to stay focused. Not only that, but you also have someone like Joe who has done it all before (and subsequently teaching it), especially when it comes to humanities and social sciences subjects.
